What Motivates You?

Webster defines motivation as the reason or reasons why we act or behave in a certain way. Ever wonder why it’s easier to be motivated by the things you want to do as opposed to the things someone else wants you to do? Well, that’s the difference between the high-falutin' terms intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. 

Any reasons imposed on you by someone or something are extrinsic motivators, and those reasons that emerge from within you are intrinsic motivators. Extrinsic motivators are not naturally a part of us, while intrinsic motivators are naturally present. 

Further, it is commonly accepted that outside forces have little impact on sustained motivation. They may stimulate some action, but that action is typically modest and short-lived. The most common form of extrinsic motivators are rewards such as bonuses or bribes. These forms of compensation are never extended without end. As a result, the power ends when the cash ends.

Intrinsic motivation, on the other hand, can last a lifetime. Common forms of intrinsic motivation are:

  • Summer is coming, and I want to lose weight to look good in my swimsuit.
  • My daughter is getting married in June, and I want to be able to walk her down the aisle.
  • I’m getting older, and I sure hope by staying active, I can meet my grandkids.
