The Power of Little Nudges for New Habits

Learning new habits and breaking old ones is tough. I’ve struggled with learning one new habit for over a year, and still I’m not there. I want to wear a mask every time I enter a retail establishment or public place. I’ve even gone so far as to set up a visible cue to reinforce my goal. I always leave a clean mask in plain sight in my car, right in front of the steering wheel. Sometimes, I will catch a glimpse of the mask as I spin out of the driver’s seat. Yet, all too often I find myself rushing back to the car to get my mask.

Establishing new habits of any kind is not for the faint of heart. And when it comes to building healthing eating habits, well, that’s another story entirely. Changes to our lifestyle routine are the hardest habits to break. That’s where the idea of nudges comes in. Nudges are gentle pushes, pokes or prods to get you to move in a certain direction or to adopt a certain behavior without a huge commitment. Many behavioral science experts endorse the practice of nudges – Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein wrote the Bible on nudging, simply called Nudge.

Nudging is a key ingredient in making healthy habits easy to adopt. At Healthrageous we do this through our digital experiences. We nudge our seniors and inspire them to take action on their goals. For example, we digitally nudge to drink more water or stand up from that jigsaw puzzle and take a walk or move around. Experts say that bad habits can be transformed into good habits in 10-16 weeks and nudges are central to that transformation.

Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day and we don’t change old habits of many years in a month or two, or even three. The more we devise ways to nudge, those habits stay top-of-mind. Like putting my mask in plain sight. While I’ve yet to achieve a perfect record, that visible nudge will help me get there over time.
